35/50 Mile Endurance Rides

The Santa Fe Trail Spring Ride will be held on April 26, 2008, near Council Grove, Kansas. Last year the ride was called 'The Dodge City Shootout', held near Dodge City, Kansas. It is anticipated that this ride will become an annual event with this being the second annual ride.

This ride is conducted by the management, veterinarians, and staff of the Great Santa Fe Trail Horse Race Endurance Ride. This ride will be both a 35 and a 50 mile ride, and has been sanctioned by the American Endurance Ride Conference (AERC), Ozark Country Endurance Riders (OCER), and Middle of the Trail Distance Riders Association (MOTDRA). All rides will be governed by AERC rules.

The Spring Ride will be a 35/50 Mile event. In order that we may adequately plan for staff and veterinarians, we suggest advance registration. Registrations will be taken the day of the ride. You may enter on-line.

Refunds will be given.

Riders will be acknowledging release of liability prior to the ride on April 26, 2008.

The cost for the 35 mile ride is $40.00 if entry received by April 16, 2008 and $50.00 day of ride. The cost for the 50 mile ride is $50.00 if entry is received by April 16, 2008 and $70.00 day of the ride. Riders who have entered the 2008 Great Santa Fe Trail Horse Race Endurance Ride, there is no charge. For junior riders 16 years and younger, there is no charge, but they must ride with a sponsor and must be members of AERC or pay the $15.00 non-member day fee. For junior riders to receive the 'free' entry, they must be entered by April 16, 2008.

Vet Check #1 and Vet Check #2 are located at the same location. Crews are allowed, but NO trailers.

The ride camp will be at the Council Grove Lake, approximately 1.5 miles north on Hwy 177. Riders can start arriving anytime after 10:00 am on April 25, 2008 and registration opens at 3:00 pm. Vetting-in begins at 4:00 pm Friday.

All dogs must be leashed at all times.

The camping is primitive. People and horse water will be provided. Porta-potties will be available. Hydrants are available for water. There are no pens or tie areas for horses. Lots of space for portable pens to be put up.

Showers are available at the Council Grove Lake camping area for a fee.

The head vet will be Dr. Leon Self.

Negative Coggins required within 1 year.

The trail will be a loop with some rolling grassy land, and county roads.

The 35 mile ride will conclude at the start point of the ride.

The 50 mile ride will conclude at the start point of the ride.
